Tissue Repair - Healing Damaged Body Tissues
Tissue Repair FAQ
What is tissue repair?
Tissue repair (TR) refers to compensatory regeneration of a tissue followed by surgical, mechanical, or chemical-induced injury resulting in restoration of structure and function of the tissue. From: Encyclopedia of Toxicology (Second Edition), 2005 K. Krafts, inEncyclopedia of Toxicology (Third Edition), 2014
What is tissue repair in toxicant-induced injury?
In toxicant-induced injury, tissue repair plays a primary role in determining whether the patient will recover from injury, or whether the injury will progress and lead to death. This article describes the process of tissue repair with particular emphasis on features unique to chemical-induced injury.
Can a tissue injury be repaired?
While a few types of tissue injury (such as minor paper cuts) can sometimes be healed in such a way that no permanent damage remains, most of our tissue repair consists of both regeneration and replacement.
What is repair after injury?
Repair after injury can occur by regeneration of cells or tissues that restores normal tissue structure, or by healing, which leads to the formation of a scar. In case of regeneration, the damaged or lost tissue is replaced by the proliferation of surrounding undamaged cells and tissue.
What is the immediate goal of tissue repair?
The immediate goal in repair is to achieve tissue integrity and homeostasis. To achieve this goal, in most tissues the healing process follows in different organs the principle of sequential phases that overlap in time and space: hemostasis, inflammation, tissue formation, and tissue remodeling.
How does tissue repair work?
The cell cycle. One of the main actions in the tissue repair script is cell proliferation. In order to heal after injury—whether by regeneration or scarring—cells must enter and progress through the cell cycle, a tightly-regulated process that consists of two main activities: DNA replication and mitosis.
How does tissue regeneration and repair occur?
This article will explain how tissue regeneration and repair occurs, and some defects that may affect it. Regeneration allows replacement of damaged tissue through cell replication and growth of tissues. The end result of regeneration is as if nothing happened - this tissue will be normal. Tissues can regenerate completely after injury if there is:
