Reproductive health affects the lives of women and men from conception to birth, through adolescence to old age, and includes the attainment and maintenance of good health as well as the prevention and treatment of ill-health (see Box 2, page 6). What is a reproductive health indicator?
An indicator must reflect only changes in the issue or factor under consideration. At national level, an indicator must be able to act as a “marker of progress” towards improved reproductive health status, either as a direct or proxy measure of impact or as a measure of progress towards specified process goals.
