Prostatitis - Symptoms, Causes, and Management
Prostatitis FAQ
What is prostatitis & what causes it?
Prostatitis is inflammation of your prostate gland. Your prostate gland sits below your bladder, in front of your rectum. Your urethra (the tube that carries pee and semen out of your body) runs through the center of your prostate.
What is the most common type of prostatitis?
Chronic prostatitis is the most common type of prostatitis, impacting 10 to 15 percent of males in the United States. This type of prostatitis is not caused by a bacterial infection, but, rather, is the result of other causes.
Can bacterial infections cause prostatitis?
Bacterial infections cause some but not all cases of prostatitis. The prostate gland, about the size of a walnut, is located just below the bladder in men. It surrounds the top portion of the tube that drains urine from the bladder (urethra). The prostate and other sex glands produce the fluid that transports sperm during ejaculation (semen).
What are the symptoms of chronic bacterial prostatitis?
The symptoms of chronic bacterial prostatitis often come and go. This makes them easy to miss. With this condition, you might sometimes have: Urinary blockage (difficulty peeing or a weak urine stream) Chronic prostatitis/chronic pelvic pain syndrome (CP/CPPS). This is the most common type of prostatitis.
What does prostatitis mean?
Prostatitis means that you have inflammation of your prostate gland. There are two main types of prostatitis: short-lived (acute) or persistent (chronic). It can also be caused by an infection (infective) or be non-infective. Less than 1 in 10 cases of prostatitis are due to bacterial infection.
What is acute prostatitis?
When the prostate gland becomes infected with a germ (a bacterial infection), the condition is known as acute prostatitis. 'itis' means inflammation, so prostatitis is inflammation of the prostate - not all forms of prostatitis are bacterial, but this leaflet will mainly cover bacterial prostatitis.
What are the symptoms of prostatitis?
Some men with prostatitis have a great deal of discomfort and pain, which may be in the pelvic area, testicles, or lower back. They may have pain when they urinate or ejaculate. Other patients may have symptoms similar to patients with BPH. Other patients are not really bothered by their symptoms.
What are the different types of prostatitis?
Prostatitis is an infection or inflammation of the prostate gland – is a non-cancerous condition. There are four main types of prostatitis: asymptomatic inflammatory prostatitis. You can also read more about the signs and symptoms , tests and treatments for the different types of prostatitis.
