Sports Injuries: Prevention, Treatment, and Recovery
Sports Injuries FAQ
What is a sports injury?
The term “sports injury” refers to the kinds of injuries that most commonly occur during sports or exercise, but they are not limited to athletes. Factory workers get tennis elbow, painters get shoulder injuries, and gardeners develop tendinitis, even though they may not participate in sports.
What is an example of a sports injury?
Examples of acute injuries are sprains and dislocations, while some common chronic injuries are shin splints and stress fractures. Treatment for a sports injury depends on the type of injury, but minor ones can usually be treated at home by resting, icing, compressing, and elevating (R-I-C-E) the injured part of the body.
What causes sports injuries?
Most sports injuries result from: Doing too much too quickly. Overestimating your fitness and ability. Lack of preparation/poor technique. Pushing your body too hard (over-training). Poor equipment, and accidents.
What are the symptoms of a sports injury?
When an athlete takes a hard fall, rolls an ankle, or gets otherwise banged up, the typical response is to shake it off and push through the pain, which can lead to longer-term problems. Symptoms from a chronic or overuse injury tend to develop over time. However, acute flare-ups of old injuries can be common.
Who is most likely to die from a sports injury?
Researchers note males ages 5 to 24 make up more than half of all sports injury episodes. The lower body is most likely to be injured (42 percent). The upper extremities make up 30.3 percent of injuries. Head and neck injuries combine for 16.4 percent of sports injuries. Deaths from sports injuries are rare.
