What is information sharing?
Information sharing describes the exchange of data between various organizations, people and technologies. There are several types of information sharing: Information shared by individuals (such as a video shared on Facebook or YouTube) Information shared by organizations (such as the RSS feed of an online weather report)
Why is sharing information important?
It can involve conveying data, insights, or knowledge that can help team members make better decisions, solve problems, or improve their performance. The goal and importance of sharing information is to create a culture of collaboration and teamwork that fosters continuous improvement and promotes the well-being of the organization.
Why is sharing information important in adult social care?
The duty to share information for individual care is as important as the duty to protect confidentiality. Sharing relevant information at the right time helps colleagues to make informed decisions and ensures that people receive safe care across different care settings. This guidance refers to adult social care only.
What is data sharing?

What should I do if information is shared?
• Ensure you are sharing the information securely. • Inform the person that the information has been shared if they were not aware of this and it would not create or increase risk of harm. Record the information sharing decision and your reasons, in line with your agency’s or local procedures.
Is sharing information a lawful basis?
Sharing information is always lawful when you choose the right lawful basis for you and for the circumstances. The ICO has a tool to help you – see below. A lawful basis is a valid reason in data protection law for processing personal information.
What is the new information sharing advice?
The revised Information Sharing Advice complements Working Together to Safeguard Children 2018 (“Working Together”), which is statutory guidance. The section on information sharing in Working Together was amended in December 2020 to alter the focus on ‘consent’ as the primary legal basis for sharing information.
