VED FAQ
What is Vehicle Excise Duty (VED)?
Purchasers of cars first registered from 1 April 2017 onwards. This measure reforms Vehicle Excise Duty ( VED) for cars first registered from 1 April 2017 onwards. First Year Rates ( FYRs) of VED will vary according to the carbon dioxide ( CO2) emissions of the vehicle.
What is Ved & how does it work?
VED is a tax on vehicles used or kept on public roads and rates depend on the vehicle type, its characteristics such as emissions and its date of first registration. VED rates have increased in line with inflation since 2010. The measure will have effect on and after 1 April 2024 for all cars, vans, motorcycles and motorcycle trade licences.
What is Ved tax?
VED is also known as vehicle tax, car tax, road tax or showroom tax. All cars must be registered for tax, though there are some exemptions to paying the tax. There are different tax bands that cars fall in – your tax band will depend on your vehicle’s age and CO2 emissions.
What is Ved based on?
In 2001 VED calculations became based on how much carbon dioxide (CO2) a vehicle emits (expressed in grams per kilometre of CO2). This was part of a Government policy designed to promote the uptake of low-emissions cars and will apply to any car whose first registration fell after March 2001 and before April 2017.
How is Ved calculated?
Since 1999, VED has been calculated according to the CO2 output of your vehicle. Vehicles emitting more pollutants cost more to tax, as part of efforts to persuade drivers to consider buying cleaner vehicles. Cars registered from 1 March 2001 to 31 March 2017 are taxed based on their CO2 emissions.
Is Ved a tax on the road?
Where the confusion comes for many drivers is the name of this specific tax. Despite often being referred to as ‘road tax’, VED isn’t a tax on the road - it’s on the vehicles that use it. Road tax was abolished in the 1930s. While many of us aren’t fans of taxes, VED does bring in a significant amount of money for the government.
