What is Urofollitropin & how does it work?

Urofollitropin is a purified form of follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) that is manufactured by extraction from human urine and then purified to remove various proteins and other substances. FSH is important in the development of follicles (eggs) produced by the ovaries.

How many amino acids are in Urofollitropin?

The alpha- and beta- subunits have 92 and 111 amino acids. The alpha subunit is glycosylated at Asn 51 and Asn 78 while the beta subunit is glycosylated at Asn 7 and Asn 24. Urofollitropin is typically used injected subcutaneously in combination with human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) to induce ovulation.

Can you conceive with Urofollitropin?

Many women being treated with urofollitropin have already tried clomiphene (eg, Serophene) and have not been able to conceive yet. Urofollitropin may also be used to cause the ovary to produce several follicles, which can then be harvested for use in gamete intrafallopian transfer (GIFT) or in vitro fertilization (IVF).

How do I know if Urofollitropin is safe?

Your doctor will perform blood tests and a pelvic exam to make sure you do not have conditions that would prevent you from safely using urofollitropin. Your male sexual partner's fertility should also be checked before you are treated with urofollitropin. To make sure urofollitropin is safe for you, tell your doctor if you have:

How is Urofollitropin used in art?

ART uses procedures such as in vitro fertilization (IVF). Urofollitropin is used together with human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) in these procedures. Urofollitropin is often used in women who have low levels of FSH and too-high levels of LH.

How much Urofollitropin should I take a day?

Maximum daily dose:450 units (of urofollitropin, or menotropins plus urofollitropin); treatment >12 days is not recommended; once adequate follicular development is evident, hCG should be administered. Withhold the hCG dose if ovarian monitoring suggests an increased risk of OHSS.
