What is a T helper cell?
The T helper cells ( Th cells ), also known as CD4+ cells or CD4-positive cells, are a type of T cell that play an important role in the adaptive immune system. They aid the activity of other immune cells by releasing cytokines.
What are helper T cells & regulatory T cells?
Once stimulated by the appropriate antigen, helper T cells secrete chemical messengers called cytokines, which stimulate the differentiation of B cells into plasma cells ( antibody -producing cells). Regulatory T cells act to control immune reactions, hence their name.
Why are T cells called 'T helper (T H) cells?
Providing help to B cells was one of the earliest discovered functions of T cells, resulting in the coining of the term 'T helper (T H) cell'.
How are helper T cells activated?
Helper T cells themselves, however, can only function when activated to become effector cells. They are activated on the surface of antigen -presenting cells, which mature during the innate immune responses triggered by an infection.

What is a T level & how does it work?
T Levels include a 45-day industry placement that can help you find and develop new talent. T Levels are an alternative to A levels, apprenticeships and other 16 to 19 courses. Equivalent in size to 3 A levels, a T Level focuses on vocational skills and can help students into skilled employment, higher study or apprenticeships.

This includes targeted PR, partnerships with education organisations, social medi... The latest T Level updates from the Department for Education, the Institute, awarding organisations and more. Use our new service to find employers who have expressed an interest in T Levels and industry placements.
How do employers and providers develop a T level course?
Employers and providers work together to develop each T Level, with support from DfE and the Institute. Groups of employers have defined the skills and requirements for each T Level course by participating in T Level panels.
