What is a surgical mask?

This helps reduce airborne transmission of pathogens and other aerosolized contaminants between the wearer and nearby people via respiratory droplets ejected when sneezing, coughing, forceful expiration or unintentionally spitting when talking, etc. Surgical masks may be labeled as surgical, isolation, dental or medical procedure masks.

What is a face mask?

A face mask is a product that covers the wearer's nose and mouth. Face masks are for use as source control by the general public and health care personnel (HCP) in accordance with CDC recommendations, and are not personal protective equipment.

Why should you wear a surgical mask?

If worn properly, a surgical mask is meant to help block large-particle droplets, splashes, sprays, or splatter that may contain germs (viruses and bacteria), keeping it from reaching your mouth and nose. Surgical masks may also help reduce exposure of your saliva and respiratory secretions to others.

What is a medical grade surgical or procedural mask?

Medical grade surgical or procedural masks provide excellent protection due to their filtration and fluid resistance. A simple “knot and tuck” technique can be used to improve the fit of rectangular surgical or procedural masks. N95 respirators offer a higher level of filtration than cloth, surgical or procedural masks.
