What are dietary supplements?

According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), dietary supplements are products that are intended to supplement, or enhance, your diet. These products can include vitamins, minerals, herbs, amino acids, enzymes, botanicals, and other ingredients.

What are supplements & how do they work?

What are supplements? As the name implies, supplements (dietary / nutritional) are any product that aims to ‘supplement’ the diet with nutrients that could potentially be missing. Popular supplements include vitamins D, C and B12, minerals like iron and calcium, herbs like echinacea and products like fish oils and probiotics.

Where can I buy supplements?

Often sold over-the-counter at pharmacies and drugstores or online, supplements are typically taken orally as capsules, pills, gummies, liquids, or powders. They may include vitamins, minerals, herbs, amino acids, enzymes, and more.

Is there a supplement for everything?

Nowadays it seems there is a supplement for everything: from vitamins to keep skin and hair healthy, to live cultures (strains of bacteria) to protect the gut, and even shark cartilage supplements thought to prevent tumour growth. So with lots of resources readily available at our fingertips, how do we know where to start, and what can we trust?

Are nutrition X products safe?

When using a Nutrition X product, you can be safe in the knowledge that it has been tested for, and is free from, a wide range of substances listed on the World Anti-Doping Agency banned substance list. We also make each of our batch test certificates readily available for extra reassurance.

Which form of supplement should I Choose?

The form of supplement you choose depends on the supplement type and nutrients it contains. Some supplements are better tolerated in pill form, whereas others are best as a powder. Additionally, the nutrient forms vary between supplements, with some types being better tolerated and/or more bioavailable.

What if a supplement has an expiration date?

If your supplement does have an expiration date on it, avoid taking it past that date, as it may lose its potency and may expose you to other risks not yet studied or regulated. Supplements can be beneficial for people who are unable to meet their nutritional needs through diet alone.

Do I really need a supplement?

Consult your physician to see if you actually need the supplement you’re considering before you spend unnecessarily. (Attractive packaging and claims to provide health benefits don’t mean the supplement will work for you or that you need it.)
