ProstateSense FAQ
What is the function of the prostate?
The prostate has various functions. The most important is producing seminal fluid, which is a component of semen. It also plays a role in hormone production and helps regulate urine flow. Prostate problems are common, especially in older men. The most common include an inflamed prostate, an enlarged prostate, and prostate cancer.
What conditions affect the prostate?
Conditions that affect your prostate include cancer, prostatitis and benign prostatic hyperplasia. Your prostate creates fluids in your semen, and the muscles in your prostate help you ejaculate. What is a prostate? The prostate is a small gland that’s part of the male reproductive system. Cleveland Clinic is a non-profit academic medical center.
Where is the prostate located?
The prostate is located within the lower pelvis. It sits just beneath the bladder and to the front of the rectum. The prostate is surrounded by a fibrous tissue called the capsule. It wraps around the urethra. The seminal vesicles run above and behind this gland. Its shape is cone-like.
What is a prostate gland & how does it work?
The prostate is a small gland found only in men and trans women. It surrounds the tube that carries urine out of the body (urethra). The prostate gland produces a thick, white fluid that gets mixed with sperm to create semen. The prostate gland is about the size and shape of a walnut but tends to get bigger as you get older.
What is a prostate specific antigen (PSA) test?
The prostate specific antigen ( PSA) test is a blood test that can help diagnose prostate problems including prostate cancer. It is not a perfect test. It will miss some prostate cancers, will detect some that would never go on to cause harm and can show a raised PSA level when there is no prostate cancer present.
How do I know if I have prostate cancer?
a physical examination of your prostate (known as a digital rectal examination, or DRE) The blood test, called a prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test, measures the level of PSA and may help detect early prostate cancer. If you are over 50, you can ask a GP for a PSA test.
How does a prostate test work?
Testosterone is responsible for things like sex drive, getting an erection, and muscle development. The prostate also produces a protein called prostate-specific antigen (PSA). This helps to make semen more watery. A blood test can measure PSA. This is called a PSA test. Doctors use it to help diagnose different prostate problems, including cancer.
Can a PSA test tell you if you have prostate cancer?
So a PSA test alone can’t usually tell you if you have prostate cancer. It is the first step in deciding if you need more tests. Many men with a raised PSA level don't have prostate cancer. And some men with a normal PSA level do have prostate cancer.
