ProstaDuo FAQ
What is the function of the prostate?
The prostate has various functions. The most important is producing seminal fluid, which is a component of semen. It also plays a role in hormone production and helps regulate urine flow. Prostate problems are common, especially in older men. The most common include an inflamed prostate, an enlarged prostate, and prostate cancer.
Where does the word prostate come from?
The word prostate comes from the Greek word prostates, which means “one who stands before,” aptly describing the position of the gland. So when viewed from below, the prostate stands before the bladder. Because the rectum is behind the prostate, it is possible to feel the prostate with a finger when inserted through the rectum.
Where is the prostate located?
The prostate is located within the lower pelvis. It sits just beneath the bladder and to the front of the rectum. The prostate is surrounded by a fibrous tissue called the capsule. It wraps around the urethra. The seminal vesicles run above and behind this gland. Its shape is cone-like.
What is acute prostatitis?
Acute prostatitis is a sudden inflammation of the prostate. This can occur due to a bacterial infection. It appears suddenly and clears up quickly with appropriate antibiotic treatment.
What is chronic prostatitis?
Chronic prostatitis or chronic pelvic pain syndrome: This disorder is the most common but least understood type of prostatitis. Found in men of any age from late teens to the elderly, its symptoms can come and go without warning. There can be pain or discomfort in the groin or bladder area.
What is acute bacterial prostatitis?
Acute bacterial prostatitis: This type is caused by a bacterial infection and comes on suddenly ( acute ). Symptoms include severe chills and fever. There is often blood in the urine. Your PSA level (see PSA test) may be higher than normal. You must go to the doctor's office or emergency room for treatment.
