How does clarithromycin work?

Clarithromycin is one of a group of medicines called macrolide antibiotics. They work by killing the bacteria causing the infection. When will I feel better? For most infections, you should feel better within a few days. For skin problems such as cellulitis, you may have to take the medicine for about 7 days before you see any improvement.

What is clarithromycin used for?

It's used to treat chest infections such as pneumonia, skin problems such as cellulitis, and ear infections. It's also used to treat Helicobacter pylori, a bacteria that can cause stomach ulcers. Clarithromycin is sometimes used by people who have an allergy to penicillin and antibiotics similar to penicillin, like amoxicillin.

How long can you take clarithromycin?

Clarithromycin is usually given for 7 to 14 days. Use this medicine for the full prescribed length of time, even if your symptoms quickly improve. Skipping doses can increase your risk of infection that is resistant to medication. Clarithromycin will not treat a viral infection such as the flu or a common cold.

Who invented clarithromycin?

Clarithromycin was invented by researchers at the Japanese drug company Taisho Pharmaceutical in 1980. The product emerged through efforts to develop a version of the antibiotic erythromycin that did not experience acid instability in the digestive tract, causing side effects, such as nausea and stomachache.

What are the side effects of clarithromycin?

Otherwise your infection could come back. Any side-effects are usually mild. The most common are diarrhoea, feeling sick (nausea), tummy (abdominal) discomfort, and unusual tastes. Clarithromycin is prescribed to treat bacterial infections such as respiratory infections, ear infections and skin infections.

Is clarithromycin a generic medication?

Clarithromycin is available as a generic medication. It is made from erythromycin and is chemically known as 6-O-methylerythromycin. Clarithromycin is primarily used to treat a number of bacterial infections including pneumonia, Helicobacter pylori, and as an alternative to penicillin in strep throat.
